A referendum was never planned in Alsace-Lorraine after World War I, rather it was clear that these parts of the country would go back to France. Now, however, there are two postcards and vignettes with the text "Volksabstimmung Elsass-Lothringen" (referendum Alsace-Lorraine), the origin of which is still completely unknown.
The card shown above is franked on the front with 15 Pfennig, in addition there are two vignettes on it whose motifs are identical to the postcards. It was cancelled with the special postmark for the "Postwertzeichenausstellung 1922" on 21.10.22, but it is very doubtful whether this card was mailed at all. The postage for the local postcard was already 1.50 Mark in postage period 9 and was therefore not covered by 15 Pfen-nig and the vignettes were not valid for postage. In other words: This seems to be a "self-made work".
The investigations so far have shown that - as mentioned - a referendum was never intended; furthermore, a Mrs. Irmgard Grünwald has written a book about the time of Alsace-Lorraine after WWI. Unfortunately, it has not yet been possible to sift through this work. Furthermore, there is said to have been an "Alsace-Lorraine. Autonomistencomite", whereby it cannot be excluded that the pieces presented here have their origin here. The question is therefore: Who can say something about the origin and creation of these maps and vignettes?
Danke!
You will notice that this vignette also exists in imperforated, as well as a second one that I did not know. It is quite possible that there are others. If you have by chance other vignettes concerning this event, it would be nice if you could send them to me by email. Thank you.
