Letter from Antsirabe in Madagascar of May 13th, 1953, in airmail for Paris. The cancellations on the back are almost illegible.
Antsirabe is a city in the Highlands of Madagascar, capital of the Vakinankaratra region, in the center of the island.
It is the third largest city in Madagascar, with an estimated urban area in 2014 of 257,163 inhabitants.
Antsirabe literally means in Malagasy "where there is a lot of salt" (an locative, sira "salt", be "large" or "many"). This probably refers to the quality of the city's soil and water which are very rich in mineral salts due to their volcanic nature.
Antsirabe is also called "city of water".
